Although I'm not a religious person, I do enjoy the cozy warmth of the season: friends gathering for long meals and conversations. Imbibing and un-inhibiting oneself to say all the things you wanted to all year long. Who couldn't love it?
Spent this year again holed up at home enjoying movies (Spiderman 3--thought it was okay, although Tobey Maguire doesn't do it for me and I was especially turned off by his dark non-Spidey "dapper-goth" get up when not in his bizarro world Spidey thermals; The Host--GREAT, i mean really GREAT, Korean horror, monster flick--no Hollywood endings on this one, but I agreed with the reviewers--really worth a watch; Stardust--Michelle Pfeiffer is still luminous and strange looking which makes me love her even more and this was a fine story, but Clarie Danes has not impressed me since she was Angela Chase and Rober De Niro--what can i say? he's a great actor, but i hate when he does these roles--they don't look good on him at all; The Bourne Ultimatum--a bumpy ride because the cinematographer for #2 & #3 of this series took the time off and just strapped the cameras to car bumpers or actors' shoulders [hello--could someone afford a tripod? or those apparati where the camera is held to the hip of the cinematographer? it's just too jumpy!] so i don't recommed drinking or doing drugs [oops!] before watching this one, but the story line is still good and i like watching Matt Damon in these flicks. As they say, a good romp.)
Also, we finished watching Season 4 of The Wire and the last two episodes slayed me, dismayed me, disheartened me, scared me and left me wishing I had cable so i could watch the final series with the rest of the city that can afford cable, but also glad that i don't. It'll be another year before I visit those characters in TV land again, although any one of us that live here can go down Broadway Avenue, south of North Avenue and see row upon row upon row upon block upon block upon block of boarded up houses. The purpose of this trip? It would be to remind myself that i'm pretty goddamn lucky that i was born to my parents in a different time, in a different place.
In other news, the rest of the weekend was spent catching up on Season Three of BBC's Doctor Who series (the newest one with the lovely David Tennant.) I have to say I don't like how they are pushing the love story between him and his new companion. She's pushy and it's not developing organically at all. ick.
Then in even more important OTHER news, #1BB and I completed one task of a long list of things I've been wanting to Get Done: a personalized dress form. I have often wanted to reassemble clothes of mine that fit, but not quite perfectly and now I can. Witness the progression below. You too can do this at home, but be prepared to breathe shallowly for 45-50 minutes, almost pass out when you get to the neck line and have 2-3 rolls of duct tape on hand (who doesn't??!) It is beyond me how women survived fashion that required corsets. Impossible to breathe, impossible to move and barely possible to have any thoughts that require blood flow steadily to the brain.
But I have to say it was fun and it looks cool. I'll post a pic of the finished product when it's secured to an old mic stand (recycling!!)
I almost completely forgot: I also finally saw Real Genius. Val Kilmer. It was funny. But I don't remember alot of it.
