Dan Fogelberg was the first live concert I ever saw (with my parents.) At the time, i was a HUGE, i mean, HUGE HUGE fan of his music and would wander around the house requesting that they play "Run For the Roses" and "The Leader of the Band" over and over and over on our record player. My parents, who i believe, liked F-berg probably got worn out by my insistence, but were gracious enough to take me to the show in Dallas. I don't remember how young I was, but it was pretty young. Less than 10 years old.
My strongest memory of the show was standing on my seat to see over the shoulders of these two screaming female Dan Fanatics who were jumping for every song. I suppose my second strongest memory of the show was that they were were both wearing high-waisted, acid washed jeans. (A new form of carbon dating for our memories? We can pin point the date by our poor fashion choices? I'm sure I was wearing something at least as dreadful.) My third memory was that it was an incredible thing to hear a person play the music from the record play live. It was actually him! I remember thinking how lucky i was to have seen the man himself playing his own songs that i had memorized!
Dan has died, and he was young, only 56! Younger than my parents. i still love those songs and when i hear them on the radio (i listen to Delilah on tour, people--and i know you do, too, so don't get uppity!) i sing out all the lyrics and remember my old house on Regent Street in Plano and being young. I have always loved this about music--how it is a soundtrack for certain times in our lives. (Since I finished my run with Move Like Seamus this weekend, I'm sure I'll think of a certain smoky bar and the fun/misery i had there every time i hear "Tainted Love.")
The weird thing i just thought of is: I saw this dude peform 20 years ago. He must have been around 34-36 years old. Just a few years older than I am.
