18 wheels...and a dozen roses

got to meet Kathy Mattea tonight. i have long admired her rich, country voice and had no idea she was such a kick ass guitar player. her band was rockin' and she was youthful and energetic. mostly, she sang songs about coal mining (her current project) but she obliged me and played a song i knew very well of her past catalog....18 Wheels and a Dozen Roses. The whole audience sang with her on the chorus and she became teary eyed. it was a good musical moment. felt like sharing something good and important.

I also met Hazel Dickens. My friend Ken Carpenter is going to be jealous. This woman has been singing about coal mining longer than there's been coal mining, but she too is youthful, energetic and spy with a great sense of humor about herself. I loved meeting her after reading about her and hearing her big voice call across the hollers in recordings for the past 2 years.
am making contacts and having loads of fun, but the sessions and playing go until 3 and 4AM in the hotel. i'm glad i'm not staying there, i wouldn't be getting any sleep.
