humanity ISN'T actually a bunch of lazy jerks

i try not read the news in the morning anymore. just can't handle it, ya know? also, i've been riding my motorcyle to work and on Tuesday, i had 3 close calls with drivers who were just being selfish, distracted and downright jerks about sharing the roads. (And yes, every one of them was driving an SUV. One was also texting on her cell phone at the time, while attempting to drive over me.)

So, i'm reading the news at lunch today. And I come across this. And I smile. Here's a dude who thinks about other people. People he doesn't know. People he will never meet will benefit from his thoughtfulness.

And then this happens, too: Yesterday, trying to get a bunch of errands done on my motorbike, including the post office. Get to the post office and i have absolutely no change to put in the meter. I know i'll be in there for more than 5 minutes and that will be the time i'll get a ticket. Ugh. so i'm standing there, wondering what i should do and a dude walks by and i say "I'm so sorry to bother you, but could i ask you for a nickel for the meter?" He smiles, reaches down into his pocket and pulls out a mound of change. He says, "Take what you need."

I don't know if this guy will read this. But even if he isn't, I'm grateful that he did that. Just even saying that: take what you need. He doesn't know this, but he really helped me.

Such a small, yet important thing. Just think how much could be changed if there were 250 million of us doing just a small thing like that every day.

"And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward." (Matthew 10:42)
